Graduate Admission Requirements

Graduate Assistantships

About the Awards

These competitive awards provide a tuition scholarship and a stipend to compensate students for assisting with various assigned duties including:

  • Teaching undergraduate minor instrument classes in the music education department
  • Teaching private lessons to non-music majors
  • Tutoring respective concentration areas
  • Offering assistance to faculty and staff in music theory, electronic music, concert management, the music library, the instrument and piano repair shops, and the music office

Assistantship awards are split between tuition scholarship (6.5 credits) and a stipend, which, when combined, are the equivalent of the cost of full tuition for up to four semesters. The awards have a cash value of approximately $25,000 over the two-year degree period.

Eligibility

Graduate assistantships are available for applicants pursuing full-time enrollment during the academic year.  Assistantships are also available for applicants participating in the summer-only music education program.

Applying

To apply for an assistantship, applicants must complete the general admission requirements, and in addition:

  1. Indicate your intentions on the online application
  2. Submit two additional letters of recommendation (for a total of four letters) with your application

We strongly recommended that applicants in music education (academic year only), performance studies, and Suzuki pedagogy attend an on-campus audition for full consideration for assistantships.

Screening for conducting and composition applicants will begin January 15.  Screening for all other applicants will begin March 1.
