Bachelor of Music in Combination with an Outside FieldThis program allows you to combine music with a sequence of courses in another discipline, such as audio production, scriptwriting, advertising and public relations, computer science, economics, or mathematics. Thus you'll have the maximum flexibility to tailor your degree to suit your interests and career plans. About half your courses will be in music; the other half will be a combination of liberal arts study and courses in your chosen outside field

Bachelor of Music in CompositionThe bachelor's degree in composition gives composers a strong grounding in the Western art music and allows the flexibility to investigate special compositional areas such as electroacoustic music, jazz, and film scoring. In addition to general professional music requirements, you will take courses in orchestration and arranging, electroacoustic music, counterpoint, and compositionpractical, hands-on classes designed to teach writing skills for both instruments and voice. The composition program features guest composers and a state-of-the-art electronic and computer studio. In addition, the contemporary chamber ensemble performs student works, and student composers study and work with a distinguished composer in residence as part of the Karel Husa Visiting Professor of Composition series. Guest composers such as John Corigliano, Christopher Rouse, Joan Tower, and John Harbison present master classes, critique student work, and give lectures on their own works, and music school ensembles perform the visiting composers' works. The broad-based and practical approach of the composition program affords you the opportunity to study with some of the country's leading composers, to hear your own music performed by skilled musicians and ensembles, and to enrich your traditional composition study with writing experiences in popular American styles and commercial media.

Bachelor of Music in Jazz StudiesThe jazz studies major allows comprehensive training in jazz performance, arranging, improvisation, and history. In our jazz program you'll perform in a variety of settings with both large and small ensembles. There are lots of venues both on and off campus for a polished performance or an impromptu jam session. With the exception of jazz guitar majors, all students in this degree program take private performance lessons in the classical idiom. Jazz guitarists may study the electric instrument in the jazz idiom for this degree but must audition on both the nylon-string classical guitar and the electric guitar.

Bachelor of Music in Music EducationThis degree program combines a broad educational background with the development of performance skills. Ithaca's commitment to hands-on, field-based learning means you'll be observing classes in your freshman and sophomore years and teaching classes in your junior year earlier than in most undergraduate programs. Two years of study in the basics teaching techniques and educational psychology, for example gets you ready for the classroom. Ithaca juniors are placed in local schools, where they receive one-on-one advice from a teaching professional and a mentor. Seniors participate in intensive, full-time student teaching in New York State public schools and receive even more professional feedback. The program is tailored to vocal or instrumental music education; keyboard and guitar majors follow the vocal curriculum. Bachelor of Music in Music TheoryThis degree is designed for students who wish to concentrate their study on the materials and structure of music, with advanced study in analysis, musicianship, aural perception, and composition. Since you cannot formally enter the music theory program until the sophomore year, incoming students wishing to major in music theory audition for and are first admitted to the school as undeclared music majors.

Bachelor of Music in PerformanceThe school offers a professional performance degree for those who wish to concentrate on mastery of their major instrument or voice. Majors in piano performance may opt to specialize in a program that emphasizes accompanying. Students in this collaborative emphasis program, which provides ideal preparation for those pianists who anticipate application to a graduate accompanying program, must meet every performance standard expected of piano performance majors. Performance majors are required to give at least two recitals at Ithaca. You may be admitted to the program only through a special audition before a performance faculty committee.

Bachelor of Music in Performance and Music EducationSome students pursue a 4 1/2-year, double-degree program which combines majors in performance and music education. This program allows you to obtain the same mastery of your major instrument or voice found in the performance degree with the same field-based teacher preparation found in the music education degree.

Bachelor of Music in Performance (Piano): Collaborative EmphasisThis degree focuses careful attention on the technical and musical skills of the young solo pianist, while providing a solid foundation for further study as a collaborative pianist. The degree is supplemented with intensive study of foreign languages, diction, chamber music, duo sonata and art song literature, and opera.

Bachelor of Music in Sound Recording TechnologyThis degree program combines rigorous study of music with courses in electroacoustic music, audio production, and music recording. Besides taking core courses in digital and analog multitrack recording and editing, you'll learn to record and mix music in our professionally equipped recording studios. Your production skills are put to the test in your senior year, when you'll produce, record, edit, and master your own CD while interning in a professional recording studio. Applicants for this program must audition on a major instrument, have a personal interview with the faculty and staff who teach in the recording program, and submit a letter of recommendation that supports the applicants' technical aptitude. Tape recordings illustrating the applicants' recording expertise may be submitted, but are not required. The B.M. in Sound Recording Technology is designed for freshman entry only. One cannot transfer into this major from another academic institution, or as an internal transfer from another major in the School of Music or within the college.

About three-fifths of your courseware will be in the liberal arts. You'll receive the same rigorous training in your major instrument and in music fundamentals history, theory, and repertoire as all other music degree programs.
