Two Music Students to Present at National Conferences on Undergraduate Research

The National Conferences on Undergraduate Research (NCUR), established in 1987, is dedicated to promoting undergraduate research, scholarship, and creative activity in all fields of study by sponsoring an annual conference for students. Unlike meetings of academic professional organizations, this gathering of young scholars welcomes presenters from all institutions of higher learning and from all corners of the academic curriculum.

This year, Ithaca College is sending a delegation of 23 students representing 25 different projects to the conference at the University of Montana, from April 14 through 18. A total of 38 students were involved with the projects.

Among those students accepted to NCUR 2010 are Corey Stevens’11 (music performance, theory, double bass) and Amelia Baran ’11 (music performance education, flute) who will be presenting “Charles Ives’ Fourth of July: History in Music.”

Their sponsor Timothy Johnson, Department of Music Theory, History and Composition, says, “Corey Stevens is a Junior double-major in Music Performance and Theory. He is an accomplished performer on the double bass and a student of Nicholas Walker. Corey has participated actively in the honor's program in music theory and is a leader in the school of music. Amelia Baran is a junior double-major in Music Education and Performance. She is an accomplished performer on the flute and is a student of Kelly Covert. Amelia also participates in the honor's program in music theory and is active in community service as a volunteer at the Salvation Army and the Lansing Residential Center, where she incorporates her musical background and training into her work with at risk youth.”

Ithaca College is proud to be hosting the National Conferences on Undergraduate Research March 31-April 2, 2011. For more details, please visit the NCUR 2011 website at www.ithaca.edu/ncur2011.
