The Brooklyn Wind Symphony (formally known as the Grand Street Community Band) had its early beginnings in 2008. What started as a simplistic final project to complete a master’s degree at Ithaca College has now transformed into a true community staple, making a name for itself throughout the competitive Brooklyn and Manhattan music scene. Jeff W. Ball (MM 2008), the current Director of Bands at the Grand Street Campus High Schools in Brooklyn and director of the Brooklyn College Conservatory Wind Ensemble, has served as the artistic director of BKWS since its initial inception as his final project in finishing his Master’s at Ithaca College.
Over the past four weeks, Thomas Kline, Director of Music Admission and Preparatory Programs, has been traveling throughout Asia to audition some of the world's top young musicians. The trip was part of the USA Schools of Music tour, which includes Boston University, Eastman School of Music, Oberlin Conservatory, Manhattan School of Music, and Peabody Conservatory.
Timothy A. Johnson, associate professor of music theory and chair of graduate studies in music, just published John Adams's Nixon in China: Musical Analysis, Historical and Political Perspectives (Ashgate Publishing). Dr Johnson has published and presented numerous papers on the music of John Adams, and his 1991 dissertation was the first dissertation on the music of John Adams.
