Annemarie Farrell, assistant professor of sport management and media, and Stephen Mosher, professor of sport management and media

Fans of the San Francisco 49ers are facing a predicament, reports the Sacramento Bee: Root for your team to win or root for them to lose and gain better draft picks? Farrell said rooting for your team to lose certainly doesn't fit the classical idea of what it means to be a fan. “For some, being a real fan is about loyalty,” she said. “It's about suffering. It's the legacy of a Cubs fan who's gone 102 years without a championship.”

“It would certainly benefit the 49ers in the long run if they tanked the game and got a better shot at a quarterback,” said Mosher. “But to do that means abrogating one's ethical responsibility to the game. Ethically, the 49ers are supposed to take the field and win the game.”
