Stephen Sweet, associate professor of sociology
Stephen Sweet is predicting that retiring baby boomers are going to have a negative effect on the national economy, reports WENY-TV. “The baby boom generation has been likened to being like a pig in the python. And it's moving through the python,” said Sweet. He says by 2010, baby boomers will represent 37 percent of the U.S. labor force -- down 11 percent from the year 2000. When he examined employers at 700 companies across the country, Sweet found they understand the aging society will affect their company and the economy. “But within that widespread understanding, there's actually surprisingly little few concrete steps that employers are engaging in,” said Sweet, adding that the time to take action is now.
