Documentary on Lesbian Boxing Champion Screened at Ithaca College
ITHACA, NY — A documentary that takes a probing look at the intersection of gender, ethnicity and sexuality in women’s sports will be the next offering in the Out of the Closet and Onto the Screen film series at Ithaca College. “A Knock Out” will be shown on Wednesday, March 28, at 7 p.m. in Textor 102. It is free and open to the public.
British boxer Michele Aboro’s career came to a halt when she refused to vamp up her image and pose naked in magazines. An undefeated world champion, she was abandoned by an industry more interested in selling sex than sport. “A Knock Out” interweaves her personal story of growing up in South London — where life for a girl was never easy, let alone for a mix-race lesbian interested in boxing — and interviews with boxers whose successes strike a painful contrast to Aboro’s struggles.
The Out of the Closet and Onto the Screen series is sponsored by the Ithaca College Center for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender (LGBT) Education, Outreach, and Services. For more information, visit /lgbt/.
