Molly Apfelroth, a Communication Management and Design major, spent the summer of 2012 interning with Men’s Health, one of the most well known health and wellness lifestyle magazines, and Women’s Health magazine, both part of Rodale Inc. in NYC. Rodale is an American publisher of health and wellness magazines and books.
Molly’s for-credit internship duties included creating and designing static graphics for the Men’s Health and Women’s Health websites. Molly was responsible for photo research and editing for the magazines’ homepages. She also performed tasks such as creating customized headers for featured slideshows and sections of the website. In addition, Molly helped create materials for Men’s Health newest workout - DeltaFit - such as ads, Facebook assets and designs for promotional materials.
Molly says she fully achieved her goals and truly had a great experience as an intern for this company. “Go with an open mind,” she advises future interns. “I was a little apprehensive going into the internship because it has the title of “editorial intern,” but you do so much more than you would think,” she says.
Molly’s internship encouraged her to participate and threw her directly into the workforce. She recommends future art department interns and students get used to working with a lot of people, including those without a design/art background. Molly also said that it is important to be open to different things. “If I had let my apprehension about the title get to me, I may have passed up a great opportunity,” she said. Molly believes that the internship reaffirmed her career aspirations, and allowed her unique hands-on experience.
