Media Scholar to Discuss ‘Corporate Dominance of Internet, Media and Politics’ at Ithaca College
ITHACA, NY—Scholar and activist Robert McChesney—who published two path-breaking books this year on contemporary media and politics—will speak on that topic at Ithaca College on Thursday, October 3. Titled “Corporate Dominance of Internet, Media and Politics,” his 7:30 p.m. presentation in Park Hall Auditorium is free and open to the public.
One of the leading experts on the political economy of communication, media policy and 20th-century media history, McChesney is the author of “Digital Disconnect: How Capitalism Is Turning the Internet Against Democracy” and “Dollarocracy: How the Money-and-Media-Election Complex Is Destroying America” (with John Nichols)
McChesney is the Gutgsell Endowed Professor in the Department of Communication at the University of Illinois. Besides being a critic of the U.S. media system, he is also an advocate of media reform and cofounder of the public interest group Free Press. The late historian Howard Zinn called him “one of the nation’s most important analysts of the media.”
His Ithaca College presentation is sponsored by the Park Center for Independent Media (PCIM).
“It’s hard to find anyone who has looked critically at the state of our political and media systems, especially since the Internet, who has not benefitted from the in-depth scholarship and thinking of Professor McChesney,” said Jeff Cohen, director of the PCIM.
Before becoming an academic, McChesney was himself a journalist. His earlier books include “The Global Media,” “Rich Media, Poor Democracy: Communication Politics in Dubious Times” and “Tragedy and Farce: How the American Media Sell Wars, Spin Elections, and Destroy Democracy.” In 2011, he coedited “Will the Last Reporter Please Turn out the Lights: The Collapse of Journalism and What Can Be Done to Fix It.”
McChesney has also served since its inception in 2009 as a judge for the Izzy Award, an honor presented annually by the PCIM in recognition of outstanding achievement in independent media.
Based in the Roy H. Park School of Communications at Ithaca College, the Park Center for Independent Media was launched in 2008 as a national center for the study of media outlets that create and distribute content outside traditional corporate systems.
