IMC major and CMD minor Kim Booth, ’12, interned at Stephens Media Group, a radio broadcasting group in Rochester, NY over the summer of 2010. Stephens Media Group includes radio stations WZNE 94.1 FM (The Zone), WRMM 101.3 FM (WARM 101.3), and WFKL 93.3 FM (Fickle 93.3), which serve the greater Rochester area. The stations broadcast from the same office in downtown Rochester and the group also operates a great number of promotional events daily for each station.
Kim reported to Stephens Media Group’s Marketing Director Scott Hixon and Promotions Coordinator Danielle Raymo, where she helped the promotions staff prepare for events, database listeners from promotional events, contact winners of contests and meet with winners to give them their prize, work with the production tools to edit and air commercials, and even served as the voice for many commercials and public service announcements.
However, the most important aspect of her internship was working the promotional events on a weekly basis. Kim worked events for all three stations and learned how radio stations promote themselves in unique ways. The largest events she worked included a concert for the band Weezer on July 11th, 2010 and a large, all-day concert festival called Bonzai on August 1, 2010, which is organized, planned, and executed solely by The Zone 94.1. She played a crucial role in helping to organize Bonzai by setting up many areas of the festivals and worked at the festival all day, rotating between a number of particular areas including backstage, security, and at the Zone’s merchandise tent.
When discussing her internship experience, Kim said, “I absolutely loved my internship with Stephens Media Group. It was a ton of fun, and I learned a lot. Music is my passion, so being able to work with it in combination with my other passion for promotions and IMC, it was more fun than it was work. I got to work at concerts for some of my favorite bands and even meet one of my favorite musicians, which was such a great experience. I learned that although these three stations are in the same office, each has their own personality that is reflective in their promotions and I learned just how to make that personality show through at each event. I really hope that I can have fun future experiences like the one I had at Stephens Media Group.”
