Jake Robbins '13 Finds Success In and Out of Water

Being a student athlete at Ithaca College is a challenging and rewarding experience. IMC major Jake Robbins ‘13, a third-year member of Ithaca College’s swimming and diving team has found that by challenging himself in the pool, he has been able to turn his hard work in the pool into greater success in the classroom and in interviews.

The swim team at Ithaca College has maintained a high standard of excellence over the past 20 years. Jake has been on the team for three years, and has won the state and conference titles in two of those years, including a trip to nationals and an All-American finish in 2012.

“Our team expects to win,” said Jake. “Other teams look like they may be a stronger competitor for the title early in the year, but we show up to the conference championship meet prepared better than anyone. We set our expectations and standards higher than the rest of the teams, which paid off in dividends at the end of the season." Jake cited this standard of excellence as the main reason why he excels in the IMC major.

IMC majors frequently work on group projects, putting a heavy emphasis on teamwork. Jake finds that his experience with the swim team has helped him to take a leadership role in the classroom. Jake added, “Being an athlete definitely gives you a sense of pride and leadership in the classroom. I see every assignment as a competition between my classmates, which helps me produce the best work that I can.”

Jake hopes to incorporate skills he has obtained from both the IMC and swimming programs into the workplace to help him build a career in either media planning or advertising. This summer, Jake hopes to pursue an internship at a media planning agency and continue training for his final swim season at Ithaca College, where the team will be racing for its third conference title in three years.

The Ithaca College Men's Swimming and Diving team is a NCAA Division 3 member of the Empire 8 Conference. Over the past 10 years, the team has won various state and conference titles. The team is coached by Kevin Markwardt and Nick Stone. The team practices and races in the Ithaca College Athletic and Events Center.
