Rachael Travers '14 Creates a 5k Road Race to Benefit Cancer Research
In honor of her late father, Rachael Travers '14 is planning a 5k road race in her hometown of West Newbury, Massachusetts, for the summer of 2012. All proceeds from the race will benefit the Boston-based Dana Farber Cancer Research Institution.
Rachael, an IMC major who runs track for the Bombers, wanted to combine her love of running with her strong connection to the fight against cancer. In the summer of 2011, she came up with the Christmas in July 5k to honor the five-year anniversary of her father’s death. Backed by her former employer, Greater Boston Running Company, as well as other organizations like Market Basket and New Balance, Rachael designed a 3.1-mile course on the roads of West Newbury, Mass. Set for July 21, 2012, the Christmas in July 5k has already attracted the interest of many community members, cancer survivors, and local running groups and clubs.
Rachael attributes her success to the schooling she has received at Ithaca. She said, “I used what I learned in Legal Environment of Business to create contracts for sponsors, designed a website from principals I learned in Presentation Media and Design, and sent out press releases based on templates from Writing for Public Relations. This race is like my own capstone course.”
