WHYCHALLENGE SOCIAL ISSUES WITH CITY YEAR NEW YORK?
• Because only one third of fourth graders read at a proficient level.
• Because the student/teacher ratio is 30:1; double the national average of 15:1.
• Because students that do not attend after school programs are 57% more likely to drop
out of school and 27% more likely to become arrested.
• Because civic participation has dropped 60% and New Yorkers need to become more
engaged in their community

WHO ARE CORPS MEMBERS?
WHAT DO THEY DO?

Our corps members are selected from a cross-section of 17 to 24 year olds, representing different racial, socio-economic, and educational backgrounds. Corps members are placed on teams of 8-12 members, who rely on the different talents and skills to serve their community. Teams address the pressing issues in New York City by running tutoring and library programs in elementary schools, running service-learning after school programs, and leading thousands of New Yorkers in community service that revitalize community centers, parks and schools.
