The GREEN Tour
The GREEN Tour (Gardening, Recycling, Eating, Enjoying Nature) is an opportunity for first-year students to learn about Sustainability and to connect to one another and to the Ithaca community by exploring local food traditions. The group will travel by bus to see firsthand the diversity of food production systems in use on a variety of farms around Cayuga Lake. A hike in the Taughannock Falls gorge and dinner at Stewart Park are also trip highlights.
Sustainability guides will lead discussions and exercises about participants’ observations and sites they have explored. The GREEN Tour will help new and transfer students learn about being a part of a connected community and understand the impact they have on a local level, regional, and global level.
GREEN Tour participants have the chance to:
- Observe and participate in Ithaca local, sustainable community
- Discuss their connection and impact on the community
- Visit local area attactions such as the Gorges and Farmers' Market
Comments from The GREEN Tour participants:
"Participating in Jumpstart was one of the best decisions I have ever made. It gave me the opportunity to meet new people, move in early, and learn more about the community of Ithaca."
"The Sustainable Community Challenge (now called The GREEN Tour) was a great experience where I got to learn about local agriculture and explore Ithaca. SCC showed me how I could better help the environment and it helped me adjust to college life before other students arrived. I even met my best friend there!"
