Master of Science in Childhood Education
Individuals interested in teaching at the elementary school level can now take advantage of the college’s newest graduate program – the M.S. in Childhood Education program, which prepares graduates for initial certification in grades 1-6. Developed in conjunction with local-area public school administrators and teachers, our Childhood Education program is an intensive, full-time, 13-month graduate program.
Beginning with their summer coursework, Childhood Education students are immersed in the study of complex educational issues and current approaches to curriculum and instruction. Extensive field experiences in public schools are core to the success of this program; our Childhood Education graduate students are assigned to classrooms right from the first day of school and continue working directly with children throughout the year. Graduates of this program gain the knowledge and skills they need to become outstanding first-year teachers.

Graduate students in the Childhood Education program complete both a professional portfolio and an action research project. The professional portfolio provides evidence that graduates have met College, state, and national standards for effective teaching. Preparation of the portfolio begins during the first semester of the program and reflects the candidate’s professional growth and development throughout the program. The action research project is also a yearlong project: the research proposal is developed and refined in the summer and fall, data is collected and analyzed in the spring, and the research report is written and presented in the final summer semester of the program.
