Contributed by Timothy A. Johnson on 05/13/2014
In honor of the School of Music Class of 2014, Dr. Timothy A. Johnson (Department of Theory, History, and Composition) will give a special presentation on music and baseball on Friday of Senior Week. Later this month Dr. Johnson will present this lecture at the National Baseball Hall of Fame at the Cooperstown Symposium on Baseball and American Culture.
“Walk-Up and Entrance Music in Baseball: Identity, Motivation, and Intimidation”
Music and Baseball is one of Dr. Johnson’s primary areas of research. He has published a book and an article on music and baseball, and has an additional article scheduled to be published in 2015. He has given nine different conference presentations on the subject (two international, six national, and one regional). He also has received a major national award for research in this area for his book, Baseball and the Music of Charles Ives: A Proving Ground (Sporting News-SABR Award for Baseball Research 2004).
In the 2013-14 academic year Dr. Johnson has been on sabbatical during which he has written four articles (one published, one scheduled for publication, and two under review) and has given two presentations, in addition to the one mentioned above. His projects this year include an article on John Adams’s orchestral work, My Father Knew Charles Ives; an article and presentation on Philip Glass’s three “portrait operas” (Einstein on the Beach, Satyagraha, and Akhnaten), a pedagogical eBook chapter on contextual writing using the film Philadelphia and Umberto Giordano’s Opera Andrea Chénier, a pedagogical panel presentation on mathematical music theory, and an article on Randal Alan Bass’s musical version of “Casey at the Bat.”
