All new and transfer music majors take the Music Theory Fundamentals Examination during summer orientation.

During summer orientation, all new music majors at Ithaca College must take the Music Theory Fundamentals Examination on Day 1 – prior to the start of orientation. Students will also participate in a Keyboard Placement Exam and, if needed, a short sight singing placement exam during the class registration process.

Musical theater and music minor students do not need to participate in this placement process and will receive more information about their program during summer orientation.

Interested in private lessons or non-music major involvement opportunities?

New students will have an opportunity to audition for private music lessons on Day 3, after course registration. Bring your instrument and be prepared to perform a 2-minute selection. (If you have a large instrument or cannot bring your instrument to orientation, contact the music school.)

Transfer students can discuss private lesson options with a music faculty member during your orientation session.

Non-music majors should stop by Whalen 2301 between 9:00-11:00 a.m. on Day 3 to discuss opportunities to get involved in ensembles, music classes, and private lessons.
