RESIDENTIAL LIFE GUIDE
room personalization

Holiday Decorations: Guidelines for holiday decorations will be sent to students before each holiday to prevent fire hazards. Holiday lights are popular in student rooms year-round. If you wish to use holiday lights, you must comply with the following rules:

  1. Electric lights are not allowed on room doors.
  2. You may put a single string of interior lights around or two electric candles in a window only if the lights carry the Underwriters' Laboratory label and are in good operating condition (broken plugs, frayed/damaged electrical cords are not acceptable).
  3. Lights may never be wrapped around items such as bed frames as this significantly increases the risk of fire.
  4. Holiday lights should be turned off when you and your roommate(s) leave the room.
  5. Candles are not permitted in student residence hall rooms or apartments under any circumstances. Candles for religious observances may be permitted in the lounges with approval from Residential Life staff.

Ceilings, Doors, and Walls:

  1. Students may not affix posters, tapestries, fishnets, or any other covering to the ceiling in a room, apartment, or suite.
  2. Posters may be placed on the wall of a room, apartment or suite so long as they do not collectively cover 60% of the wall surface, or cover any fire detection or fire safety equipment, lights, or heaters.
  3. Do not hang items from sprinkler heads or pipes.
  4. Residents of the Circle Apartments should not use Funtack of any kind. For all other residents, do not use BLUE FUNTACK. White Funtack, tape, and other adhesives may be used as long as they don't damage any painted and finished surfaces. The College strongly recommends the use of Command adhesive for all wall and door decorations.
  5. Wallpaper or contact paper is prohibited.
  6. No curtains, tapestries, or other materials may be hung in front of a room, apartment, or suite door or entryway.
  7. You may not nail hooks into walls, ceilings, doors, or College furniture.

The Office of Environmental Health & Safety, and the Office of Residential Life reserve the right to inspect any and all decorations for safety. Items determined in that judgment to be unsafe will be removed.
