PAST PROGRAMS

Why Sustainability?

Jason Hamilton's groundbreaking presentation that jump-started much of the current work on sustainability at Ithaca College. It assesses the impact humanity has had on the planet and how that leads to the necessary application of approaches like sustainability.

TCLocal/Farmers Market

Jon Bosak of Tompkins County Local's presentation on peak oil, its consequences, and a look at possible solutions for Ithaca and Tompkins County. It was an eye-opening ponder of the finite nature of fossil fuels and the potential consequences for humanity once they are gone.

Northeast Sustainable Energy Association's Green Buildings Open House

This open house allows individuals interested in green building and alternative energy to visit homes and businesses where these are in use. Last year, Ithaca Bakery's solar panels, straw bale homes, masonry heaters, and solar hot water at Ecovillage at Ithaca, and local homes heated with wood, wind and solar energy were visited.

Ecovillage Tour and Visit

This was a tour of Ecovillage and sustainability circle with some members of its community. Ecovillage is located on 175 acres of West Hill and is designed to promote sustainable living. Its two neighborhoods of 30 cohousing units contain two common houses, a CSA, an organic berry farm, a pond, and more. Ecovillage is involved with IC in a number of curriculum projects each semester.

The Sustainable Human

Professor Monty Berman presented a learning module to explore the needs of the individual and how that can lead to sustainable practices.

Additional programs have included Brent Katzman's Green Building: Issues and Strategies seminar, A trip to Fenner Wind Farm, speakers from the Helderberg Wind Forum, and a visit to Cornell's Ecology House.
