Student-Faculty Research Collaboration
With an H&S Ithaca Fund grant, biology professor Bruce Smith was able to purchase a research-grade quantum light meter for use in an honors research project conducted by William Brogan III '07. The research project studied the sensitivity of a water mite species to different light spectra, a topic which has been, to date, poorly studied. Brogan designed and carried out the study, including collecting specimens from Jennings Pond (just south of campus) and studying their behavior in the laboratory. Smith states: "The best way to learn about science is to do science, and this has been a tremendous learning experience for Will, taking this research from the planning stage through preparing a manuscript for publication." In addition, the light meter will continue to be used by many students in a variety of future research projects.
