MASTER PLAN
student responsibility

Have a Housing Question?
Contact us at housing@ithaca.edu
Goal 1. Increase responsibility around upkeep of residence hall bathrooms and kitchens
  • Provide cleaning supplies in kitchens
  • Post a kitchen use checklist and tips on how to avoid fire alarms
  • Provide clearer expectations for trash disposal
  • Make students responsible for cleaning own bathrooms for on-going problems
  • Develop protocol for community consequences including potential removal of amenities
Goal 2. Decrease floor vandalism
  • Develop a plan to effectively deal with vandalism
  • Create consistency with housekeeping/facilities response to damage (open communication)
  • Use a developmental approach of community expectations and resident-generated programs to increase student attachment and responsibility for floor
  • Allow students to alter their physical space – encourage murals, etc
  • Increase student sense of ownership by creating community guidelines
Goal 3. Help students establish a sense of community
  • Develop roommate 101 module for all incoming students- require them to complete before they can select housing
  • Have more strict expectations on roommate agreements – require all 1 st year students to complete them
  • Require mediation with reference to roommate agreement prior to any student moves
  • Identify incentives for faculty to be more involved in floors
  • Maintain current residential learning communities
  • Establish, where feasible, lounges as academic spaces – install internet and whiteboards
  • Have professional staff discussions with students about their GPA
  • Help Resident Assistants better educate students on community guidelines/responsibilities through pre-packaged bulletin boards and other methods
Goal 4. Increase behavioral responsibility
  • Assess and evaluate current sanction program
  • Create a broader range of creative/experiential sanctions (i.e. civility)
  • Explore methods of greater accountability for not completing sanctions – i.e. housing restrictions, etc
  • Send parent letters whenever we believe it would benefit the student
  • Offer “Don't cancel class” programs to faculty on behavior issues (i.e. have a group of staff and students who can present canned programs on non academic topics when a professor will be out)
  • Create objectives for hearings based on type of violations
