Hey there! My name is Emily Miner, and I’m a Therapeutic Recreation Alumni from the class of 2016.
I’m from Newfield, NY which is just south of Ithaca. My home is 20 minutes from campus. I love spending time with family and friends, and I really enjoy being active. Rock climbing, hiking, running, kayaking, backyard games- I’m down for pretty much anything!
Going into college, I knew I wanted my career to be something where I could help people improve their quality of life. I started my undergraduate career at Tompkins Cortland Community College where I majored in Recreation: Exercise Studies. The program was really cool because it taught me to look at exercise and fitness from a new perspective. I began to view fitness from more of a therapeutic recreation perspective, meaning that I looked at the person as a whole and considered the impacts of social, emotional and physical wellbeing as the measurements of fitness. My academic advisor at the community college suggested I check out TR, so I took Introduction to TR and fell in love! After completing two years and obtaining my associate’s degree, I transferred to IC for Therapeutic Recreation and have loved every second of it!...Well almost!
I love the Recreation and Leisure Studies (RSL) Department at Ithaca! The faculty and staff are fantastic! They went above and beyond to ensure my experience was nothing but positive. I loved the community within the department. With small class sizes, you really get to know the other students in the department and become close. Ithaca College provides ample opportunities for RLS students to gain hands-on experience which prepares us well for transitioning from college into the real world.
After graduating from Ithaca College, I began my career working as a behavior technician at Blue Sky Center for Learning where I work with children who have autism spectrum disorders (ASD). I began working on my Master’s degree in Applied Behavior Analysis at Ball State University in May of 2017. My goal is to become a board certified and licensed behavior analyst (BCBA and LBA) specializing in working with children with ASD.
If you would like to further inquire about me and my experiences at Ithaca College, don’t hesitate to contact me. I’d love to chat with you about the RLS department, the programs offered, where I am now, or whatever.
