Malick Mercier is a pioneer on the new frontier of social media journalism. As a first-year student at IC, Malick served as Instagram’s on-the-ground correspondent for its March for Our Lives news coverage in March 2019.

Malick built a portfolio of next-gen storytelling throughout high school as a reporter for AirlineGeeks.com. He also wrote for his community newspaper and created his own work which he uploaded online. In his current role as a member of IC’s Park Scholars Program—which challenges students to use the power of media to make a positive impact on the world—Malick was perfectly positioned to do the story justice by sharing his experiences of the demonstration with Instagram’s 230+ million followers.

"I was truly moved at that sight of all those people coming out to fight for something they believed in, and it was organized by students! I could feel the energy, which strengthened me and my work."

Malick’s experience with Instagram led to several other opportunities, which included hosting the media company Mic’s Instagram coverage of the first stop of the March for Our Lives Road to Change Tour in Chicago and working with companies like JetBlue, Converse, CNN, Teen Vogue, TOMS, and DoSomething.org.
