Discontinuing iRubric June 1st – Replaced with robust Canvas Rubrics Tool

By Jenna Linskens, April 12, 2022

As previously announced in the January 2022 Intercom our contract with iRubric will be discontinued and no longer be included as part of the LMS list of third-party tools effective June 1, 2022. Instructors who wish to keep a copy of any rubrics will need to manually download them to an IC issued computer, Microsoft OneDrive, or another location used for storage of IC files. After May 31, 2022, users will no longer have access to the iRubric tool, and our IT team will not be able to recover files on your behalf.

In Fall 2021, a task group of faculty members and representatives of the LMS Governance Committee completed a detailed and thorough evaluation and collected feedback from faculty frequently using the iRubric tool in Sakai. The following factors informed the decision:

  • In a side-by-side comparison, the Canvas rubric tool is more modern, easier to edit, and has additional features to support student feedback and learning.
  • The iRubric third-party tool filled a gap in Sakai, while Canvas has a robust rubric tool built into the system at no additional cost.
  • A majority of faculty that used iRubric have already transitioned to the newer tool.

To assist instructors with this transition the Learning & Innovative Technologies (L&IT) team has put together several resources including a guide to walk you through a few steps on how to quickly download each individual rubric. The Canvas Instructor Guide also provides a collection of resources to learn more about using the Canvas rubric tool.
