Two IC students, Andrew Fry and Sujin Kim, have won Fulbright grants for 2010-2011, and a third IC student, Allison Girasole, has been chosen as an alternate.

Andy Fry, graduating this May with a major in English and minors in both German and Writing, will be going to Germany to teach and conduct research with regard to teaching in German high schools, and secondarily, to do research on “die Mauer im Kopf,” or the social and mental division that divides East and West Germans.  As part of investigating the deep cultural divide which still exists since the fall of the Berlin Wall, Andy will maintain a blog throughout the project to share what he learns.  Andy’s long term plans include a graduate degree in education and further study involving cultural relations.

Sujin Kim, a 2009 IC graduate with a major in Cinema and Photography and a minor in Anthropology, will be going to the Czech Republic to teach and conduct research with regard to teaching in Czech high schools, and secondarily, to pursue interests in community work and art.  Sujin plans to share her culture as a Korean American as she incorporates art into the curriculum.  She has strong contacts with MeetFactory, a Czech international center for art that supports collaboration between artists from different nations.  Sujin’s long term plans involve graduate work in nonfiction filmmaking.

Allison Girasole, graduating this May with a major in Biology, has been chosen as a Fulbright finalist, and is waiting to hear concerning her final status.  She hopes to go to Germany to work at the University of Cologne with Dr. Peter Kloppenburg to investigate the deregulation of energy homeostasis in age and diet associated metabolic diseases.  Ally’s long term plans involve pursuing an MD/PhD to become a practicing physician and medical researcher.
