In the Environmental Science program, we support you as a whole person, encouraging exploration, self-expression, and connection. Learning is focused through an “intensive” experience, in which students take two courses in the same semester that approach a topic, such as water, trees, agriculture, or technology, from different perspectives. At the same time, the relatively low number of required credits needed to complete the degree offers an opportunity to explore other topics more broadly through elective courses. We encourage you to pursue a second major or minor, such as biology, chemistry, math, art, or legal studies. Whether your passion is water, forests and land management, food systems, or renewable energy, you’ll be part of a close-knit learning community with access to faculty mentorship, immersive fieldwork, and exciting research opportunities. You’ll graduate ready to think, do, and be your authentic self in the world of environmental change.
Hands-on Learning. Real World Impact.
Explore a wide range of opportunities designed to deepen your knowledge and expand your impact.
At IC, you won’t just study environmental issues—you’ll experience them.
If you're passionate about the environment and ready to make a difference, Ithaca College is the place to start. Each year, we welcome a small cohort of 15–20 students, creating a collaborative learning environment where you’ll really get to know your classmates and professors. This is a program for students who thrive on:
- Exploring the complex connections within natural systems
- Learning by doing — especially in the field
- Working closely with faculty and peers on real-world projects
- Taking on challenges and producing meaningful, impactful work
In 2023, the US had 85,000 environmental science jobs, with 6,000 of those positions being newly created according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median pay for environmental scientists is almost $80,000 per year.

"I love that a huge part of the classes take place outdoors. Land Stewardship Program, Non-Timber Forest Products, Environmental Sentinels, Critical Skills, Tracking, and many labs like Hemp Research and Beekeeping, all take place nearly entirely outdoors. This has transformed my relationship with my surroundings of Ithaca, getting to know the region better than some people who've lived here their whole lives. It has helped connect me to my area and has made me fall even more in love with Upstate New York!"
