Information for Students

In the Summer Scholars Program, students will have transformative experiences working in partnership with a faculty mentor.

Program Expectations

Regardless of your pathway, all scholars have the following responsibilities once accepted into the program:

  • Devote significant time and intellectual effort towards your project - Scholar positions are full-time (40 hours/week) for 8 weeks
    • Due to the time commitment required, working another paid job or having other significant time commitments is not compatible with participation in the program, and is generally not permitted.
    • It is our expectation that you are available to begin your participation in the program by May 31, and that you will work consistently in the program for 8 consecutive weeks.
  • Make significant progress on your project
    • You do not have to complete your project during the summer period.
    • Many students continue their projects in the semester(s) following the summer experience.
  • Attend events organized as part of the Summer Scholars Program.
  • Submit a final report, including both written reflections on the summer experience and a description of your project.
  • Present a poster, exhibit, or presentation about your summer experience as part of the end of summer Scholar Showcase.
  • Share your work at campus events in the following academic year.

Compensation

The standard Summer Scholar compensation is $4,800 (tentative), for 8 weeks of full-time work. Wages are paid out in four installments between May 29 and July 26.

Summer Scholars are responsible for securing their own housing and should factor these costs into their summer budget plans. If IC makes inexpensive campus housing available for student workers during the summer, as they have in past years, Summer Scholars may sign up to live in the dormitories at their own expense.

For summer 2024, the program is exploring whether we will be able to offer grants to cover some of the housing costs for students who have in-person projects and choose to live in campus housing. More information on this will be available later in the spring semester.
