For the first time in decades, film festivals are cancelled and movie theaters are closed.
Although many film festivals were cancelled, COVID-19 did not stop film festivals like FLEFF, the Ann Arbor Film Festival, and SXSW Film Festival from moving to online exhibitions.
FLEFF’s online festival consists of two exhibitions, Radical Infiltrations New Media and Infiltrations A Different Media Environment. Guests to the FLEFF website have the ability to explore new media art and a variety of short films.
From March 24th to the 29th, the Ann Arbor Film Festival live streamed the festival. Guests were also able to participate in online Q&A chat sessions with the filmmakers.
SXSW Film Festival recently announced that they have partnered with Amazon Prime Video to stream films for a 10-day period in the U.S. The opportunity is free to audiences around the country. They have not released the date yet, but it is either going to start in late April or early May.
Throughout the pandemic, film festivals like these proved their ability to adapt and be diligent.
While looking at media that has been produced during the pandemic, I found the COVID-19 Compiler. The COVID-19 Compiler provides a multidimensional map view of the virus’ impact in counties across the U.S. The website was created recently and new features are being added every day.
My favorite part of the website is the ‘Explorer’ tab. On this page, there are two drop-down menus in which you pick the data you want to see on the map. This feature is important because users see a breakdown of demographics impacted by the virus. The map also allows users to visually see areas in which these demographics are affected the most.
The COVID-19 Compiler is updated daily and could be found by clicking this link https://covid19.topos.com .
