Image Text Ithaca Press continues to rack up awards, with two books it published last year — “My Birth” by Carmen Winant and “Wood River Blue Pool/Blue Pool” by Jo Ann Walters and Emma Kemp — featured in Time Magazine’s list of the 25 best photobooks of 2018.
Co-published by Image Text Ithaca Press and the London-based Self Publish, Be Happy Editions, “My Birth” interweaves photographs of Winant’s mother giving birth to her three children with found images of other, anonymous, women undergoing the same experience. “Wood River/Blue Pool” presents portraits of women and children living along the Mississippi River near Walter's hometown, or in Connecticut, her adult home, in addition to a combination of art criticism and murder mystery written by Kemp during a road trip with Walters.
Both “My Birth” and “Wood River/Blue Pool” were shortlisted for awards at the 2018 Paris Photo-Aperture Foundation PhotoBook Awards.
Image Text Ithaca Press is a project of the Image Text MFA program at Ithaca College. MFA students work with the press and get the experience of curating and editing, as well as working with designers and editors.
