Professor Quoted in Op-ed on State Government Interference in Local Matters

Donathan Brown, assistant professor in the Department of Communication Studies, was featured in a Huffington Post opinion piece, “The Hypocrisy in GOP-led State Government Overreach.”

In the piece, Brown was quoted on the recent trend of Republican-held state houses passing legislation that blocks or undoes local town and city laws, which he says contradicts the party’s stance against federal government interference in state and local matters: “States are usurping power from local authorities and are ultimately committing the same sin they criticize — governmental overreach.”

Brown attributes the trend to the shifting demographics of southern cities, where he says the growth of minority populations threatens the interests of “GOP-led political dynasties.”

Several other political science experts are quoted in the piece, including Iowa State University professor David Andersen and Texas A&M professor Kent E. Portney.

Brown’s research is focused on the intersection of race, rhetoric and public policy, particularly pertaining to African Americans and Latinos, and includes issues of race and the Supreme Court, presidential and political rhetoric, and legal rhetoric.
