French Teacher Education (B.A.)

Ithaca College offers a French and Francophone Studies minor that cover the diverse French-Speaking countries and communities of the world, allowing you to become familiar with a variety of cultures while enabling you to achieve language proficiency. You may be interested in our master's degree in teaching French as well.
As a student of French, you'll have plenty of ways to immerse yourself in the language and culture: attend the weekly meetings of the French Conversation Group, where you will meet international students and French native-speakers; move in to the French Quarter, a language oriented residential community; take part in short study abroad programs in Québec, or take advantage of various events in the multicultural Ithaca community. Our study-abroad programs expand your learning opportunities: you might spend a semester studying abroad in a French city such as Paris or Aix-en-Provence, or choose a program in Morocco, Madagascar or Vietnam.
The French and Francophone Studies curriculum offers a wide range of advanced courses, from “French for Business” to “Advanced Grammar through Creative Writing” or “Women in French Society”. You will have the opportunity to study a second language of your choice, to get familiar with linguistics and even choose it as a minor. We are also one of the few programs where you can learn professional translation skills and minor in Translation Studies.
Fluency in French complements many fields of study and future careers. Several recent graduates from the French and Francophone Studies program have been selected to teach English in French schools by the French embassy. Other graduates teach French in K-12 schools in the United States. Some have joined NGOs while others take advantage of their language skills in multilingual and multilingual industries, such as film and broadcast media, health services, business, or music.
