Improving Outcomes with Effective Cross-Cultural Communication

Session Information

In this session, the importance of cross-cultural communication skills paired with health literacy will be discussed.  The cultural norms, by which we live, impacts how we perceive health information which influences how we act and react to that information.  The RESPECT model from Think Cultural Health (U.S. Department of Health & Human Services) will be discussed as a practical strategy and tool for effective cross-cultural communication. 

Objectives:

  • Attendees will understand the definition of health literacy and the impact of lower health literacy skills on health outcomes. (Social Determinant's of Health)
  • Attendees will effectively know how to use cross-cultural communication as an universal precaution strategy for improving outcomes. 
  • Attendees will learn about the RESPECT MODEL as a tool for cross-cultural communication.
