In fall of 2022, we began a new initiative to create programming specifically for children that woud encourage reading, writing and creativity.

We called the first program "Comics Chaos!"

In the 2022-2023 academic year we did programs for the Tompkins County Public Library, The Ulysses Philomathic Library (Trumansburg, NY), and The Berkshire Free Library.  Our largest event drew 35 participants; our smallest, 13. Among the components we offered were:

  • Create your own comic book character
  • Art challenge wall
  • Create a comic strip
  • Graphic Novel Scavenger Hunt
  • Pop-up Graphic Novel Reading Nook
Berkshire Free Library

One of the tiniest libraries in the Finger Lakes System gave us a warm welcome in March.

Additional Program in 2024: Calvin's Comic Adventures

We did "Calvin's Comic Adventures" at Trumansburg and the Tompkins County Public Library.  Here's the description:

"Calvin’s Comic Adventures” is a comic-filled program where young minds can bring the popular comics of Calvin and Hobbes to life through engaging activities.

Alongside their favorite stuffed animal or imaginary friend, participants can create their own comic-style stories. Inspired by Bill Watterson’s classic tales, young readers will be able to read and step into the world of Calvin and Hobbes through take-home crafts,”mad-libs” style word games, scavenger hunts, and on-your-feet challenges inspired by Calvin’s favorite game, “Calvin-ball.”

“Calvin’s Comic Adventures” is a great place for all comic lovers to explore what their imaginations can achieve.

Best for kids ages 3-12 - bring your own stuffed animal or imaginary friend!

Third Program added in 2025: Comics, Crafts and Superheroes

We created a new program and debuted it during Eisner Week at TCPL.  Although we had specified the ages as 3-12, we found ourselves improvising activities for toddlers, and coaching a lot of grown-ups in bracelet-making!

Comics, Crafts and Superheroes

Become your own (super) hero with the Graphic Novel Advisory Board’s “Comics, Crafts, and Superheroes” program. This super-fun event is where young minds can bring their favorite heroes to life through engaging activities. Alongside their favorite stuffed animal or imaginary friend, participants can create their own superheroes, sidekicks, and comics. Inspired by our favorite superheroes, young readers will be able to read and step into a “super” world through take-home crafts, comic creation, scavenger hunts, and out-of-this-world photo ops. “Comics, Crafts, and Superheroes” is a great place for all superhero lovers to explore what their imaginations can achieve.
