Faculty, Staff and Student Volunteers Needed to Support our Students Presenting at the 26th James J. Whalen Symposium on April 11

IC students will present oral and poster presentations in a wide variety of fields—including business, physics, writing, poetry, health and wellness, social justice, communication, occupational and physical therapy, music, dance, visual arts, and many more.  To better understand the breadth of research IC students are conducting, please see the Whalen Website.

Student Volunteering: Faculty can encourage their students to sign up as a volunteer throughout the Symposium either as a Timekeeper for a Session or assisting at the Registration Desk.

  • Introducing students to a research symposium through volunteering may encourage them to step outside their comfort zone and partake in their own research projects.

Faculty and Staff Volunteering: How can Faculty members participate in Whalen?

  • Mentor Students who want to present. More info can be found here.
  • Serve as an abstract reviewer. (This takes place over spring break, usually takes 2-3 hours per volunteer)
  • Serve as a volunteer judge. (This takes about 2 hours on the day of)
  • Serve as a session moderator. (This takes about 1-2 hours on the day of).
  • Faculty, give your students an assignment or credit if they write up a short reflections paper on what they have learned.

This experience will show students the possibilities and resources that we have on campus. While doing that, we hope that students will understand they not only can but are strongly encouraged to participate in undergraduate & graduate research.
