It's the final week to see METAMORPHOSIS, EMBODIED, a solo exhibition by WANG Chen and PRIME, a solo exhibition by Joan Linder. Both shows will remain on view through 6pm on December 7th.
WANG Chen’s works find their origin in traditional painting and drawing practices - which go on to become technologically augmented sculpture and time-based installations. Wang’s IRL works are brought into digital spaces, which become stand-alone video works or are incorporated into to other multimedia sculpture. Escapist and seemingly magical digital environments are constructed from start to finish by the artist in a self-contained studio practice. Working with Unity and other digital software, they layer costumed video performances with painting, drawing, and sculpture, set against original sound scores. Color-filled, and at times unsettling characters, upend viewer expectations as they playfully navigate fantasy and reality in her hybrid virtual/physical worlds.
In our culture hyper-saturated by electronic imagery, Joan Linder uses the traditional materials of pen and bottled ink on paper to create life-size objects ad images. For her show PRIME at the Handwerker Gallery, Linder is re-creating packaging of everyday consumer objects. Shipping and logistics information is intertwined with corporate branding, all faithfully reproduced by hand. In Fulfill, mass-produced boxes and bags are reconsidered in an unconventional art installation pondering the objects and aesthetics we invite into our homes. The magnitude of material used briefly then discarded is readily apparent to anyone who has ever made purchases online. This exhibition of seemingly unlimited editions - with their relentless similarity – offers the false promise of infinite resources, a deception we can no longer afford to take for granted.
