Important Reminders for Our Campus Community Regarding Ithaca College’s Advertising and Posting Policy

By News, January 19, 2024

Dear Ithaca College Community,

I hope this message finds you well as we get set to embark on what promises to be an exciting spring 2024 semester. As part of the college’s commitment to maintaining a clean campus environment, I would like to a take this opportunity to remind all members of our community about Ithaca College’s policy regarding postings and other printed promotional advertisements and make you aware of our intention to better enforce this policy during the upcoming semester.

It goes without saying that the beauty of our South Hill campus is one of its defining features. However, it has recently become increasingly challenging to maintain that attractiveness, particularly the interior and exterior of our campus buildings, due to the frequency and volume of postings made in unapproved locations. These include but are not limited to: walls, columns, windows, entrance and exit doors, and other hallway doors.

Not only do these postings sometimes pose a safety risk, particularly when they are on fire doors or on windows and other areas that obstruct clear sightlines, but they also contribute to a generally unkempt look to many of our shared campus spaces. As we begin the new semester, I ask that our IC community make a heightened effort to help keep our campus buildings and shared spaces clean and organized.

During the Winter Break, IC staff from several areas helped to remove all postings and other print materials that were located in unapproved posting locations. I encourage our campus community to visit the campus advertising and solicitation policy page located within the college's policy manual for more information on the guidelines for posting flyers and other printed materials on campus.

Moving forward, the college will be making a concerted effort to monitor and remove any postings found to be in unapproved locations. Please know that this not only includes postings made by students or student organizations, but also postings made by faculty and staff or on behalf of campus departments or offices. I ask your support by helping to remove any items found posted in unapproved locations and forwarding these materials to the Office of Student Engagement or share photos of items to solicitation@ithaca.edu for follow-up. Student organizations that continue to post materials in unapproved locations will be subject to potential action from the Office of Student Engagement, while individual students found to repeatedly post in unapproved locations may face action from the Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards. Postings made by college departments and/or employees in unapproved locations will be followed up with by their supervisor. Please be aware that Ithaca College will seek restitution for any clean-up or damages that require repair as a result of postings in violation of the college's policies.

By respecting and following the designated posting guidelines, you can do your part to contribute to a cleaner and more visually appealing campus environment. Thank you for your cooperation and let's commit to working together to ensure the beauty of our campus continues to remain a source of pride for our entire IC community.

Sincerely,

Bonnie Solt Prunty
Vice President for Student Affairs and Campus Life
