New Version of Microsoft Teams on by Default Starting March 12

As previously announced in Intercom, the Information Technology and Analytics department would like to remind the campus community that a new version of Microsoft Teams will be on by default starting March 12, 2024. We encourage all Teams users to upgrade before March 12th to familiarize themselves with the new version.

Opt-In to New Teams

We invite all users to experience this faster version of Microsoft Teams with various features and enhancements. To upgrade, simply activate the 'Try the new Teams' toggle located in the upper-left corner of the existing Teams application on Windows, Mac, or the web version. You can use the same toggle to switch back to Classic Teams any time before March 12. See Microsoft’s support article to learn more about new Teams.

Notable Changes with New Teams

For detailed instructions and additional information about the features of new Teams, see the following IT Knowledge Base article 'Article - New Microsoft Teams Version' (teamdynamix.com). Some notable changes include:

  • When you first open the application, your teams will be shown as tiles, but you will have the option to switch to a list view.
  • New posts in channels will appear at the top of the channel, with an option to move them to the bottom.
  • The appearance of notifications may be updated with a new design.
  • The application will respond more quickly and use fewer resources.

Labs and classrooms will also transition to the new version of Teams during the week of Spring Break between March 12 – 15.

Classic Teams No Longer Available After 3/31/24

Microsoft plans to transition all users to this new Teams platform, with the classic Teams app retiring March 31, 2024. For the best performance and features, we recommend users switch to the new version of Teams as soon as they are able.
