TVR 33500-01 ELECTRONIC MEDIA CRITICISM is a three-credit online media studies course offered during Session 1 this summer (5/29/24-7/2/24). Class meets twice a week (Mondays and Thursdays, 5 pm - 8 pm). The course is open to the entire campus. The course will satisfy your WRITING INTENSIVE and DIVERSITY DESIGNATED requirements for the ICC.
The course focuses on the representation of gender, race, and sexuality on American television. Through lectures, readings, and written assignments we will examine the dual role television plays in contributing to and challenging racism, sexism, homophobia, and transphobia.
Students will be watching TV episodes on CANVAS and be required to complete short written assignments on the programs of their choice. The screening list includes ALL IN THE FAMILY, ATLANTA, BROOKLYN 9-9, DEAR WHITE PEOPLE, ELLEN, GIRLS, HOMELAND, INSECURE, JANE THE VIRGIN, ONE DAY AT A TIME, PARKS and RECREATION, POSE, and THE SOPRANOS.
