The Center for Educational Technology presents a new discussion series called "Faculty Show and Share." Each session features a guest faculty member who shows how they use a technology to address a teaching goal. Come hear what worked - or didn't work in a format that is informal, experimental, and fun. Discussion is encouraged and anyone is welcome regardless of their experience with technology. Contemplative Education: A Discursive & Experiential ExplorationOctober 25, 2011: 8:00 – 9:30 a.m
Mueller Chapel – Phillips Room
A brief discursive presentation will focus on equipping learners and teachers, young and old, with the means to temporarily step out of the chaos of daily life, center, and nourish the mind/body complex from a calm, clear vantage point. A simple method will be introduced to pay careful attention to immediate sense experience and those present will sit quietly for awhile. Discussion of the value of non-discursive mental training in the classroom will follow this exercise.

The Ithaca College Center for Faculty Excellence and the Faculty Development Committee invite you to attend its Fall Wine and Cheese Social, 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, on Wednesday, November 9, in McDonald Lounge at the Campus Center Building. Called “Open Spaces,” this event encourages faculty to take a well-earned break from their busy semester and discuss ongoing scholarly and creative projects with old and new friends. Gift baskets of artisan breads and cheeses will be awarded as door prizes. Each attendee will receive a ticket for a free glass of wine (cash bar for additional drinks).
Monthly workshops scheduled throughout the Fall semester.September 8: Technology & Instructional Support Services
Marilyn Dispensa, Instructional Development coordinator, will provide an overview of ITS services that support instruction at Ithaca College and show some examples of innovative ways that faculty at IC have used technology in their teaching.
Digital Media Services provides support to the academic community by assisting faculty with: the production of digital course content; graphic design; layout and publishing; media production; large format printing; and analog to digital conversion of video, slides and images. This portion of the session will be presented by Mark Hine, Digital Media Coordinator, who also serves as a consultant regarding media integration and video production.
Following a Q&A session the group will go on a tour of the CET Faculty Lab and Digital Media Services.
October 6: Faculty Integration Integration with Student Life
Learn about how you can become involved with students through interaction with the Division of Student Affairs and Campus Life. In this session, an interactive panel including Career Services (John Bradac), Residential Life, First Year Experiences (Bonnie Prunty) and Office of Student Engagement and Multicultural Affairs (Michele Lenhart) will provide an overview of the opportunities and processes for faculty involvement.
November 3: Integrative, Collaborative and Interdisciplinary Inititatives
Opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration abound at Ithaca College, and are often supported by internal grants and other incentives. In this session Michael Smith, Departments of History and Environmental Studies and Sciences, will highlight the collaborations he has engaged in during his 10 years at IC and offer suggestions for seeking out and nurturing collaborations.
December 1: Internal & External Funding Opportunities
Ithaca College offers a variety of internal grants for faculty, to support their continuing development as teachers and scholars. Carol Henderson, Associate Provost for Academic Policies and Administration, will describe each of these competitive grant programs and the processes for application and review.
Ithaca College has a number of programs funded through external support from public and private support. In this session you will learn about the resources that the College provides to help you be successful in proposing, securing and managing external grants. This portion of the presentation will be presented by William Kay, Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations.

Mentoring Workshop

This workshop will begin with an orientation about effective mentoring relationships. The role and responsibilities of mentors and mentees will be discussed.
There will be an introductory activity to enable you to get to know potential mentors and colleagues. You will be able to use this information to request involvement in mentoring groups with people who have similar needs and interests as you for the academic year 2011-2012.
The pre-workshop worksheets are accessible from the link in the sidebar of this web page. Please print and read this document prior to the workshop so that you can think about and prepare to ask questions regarding your mentoring needs.
