Listening Skills in Physical Therapy Education
Co-hosted with Dr. Greenberger, Department of Physical Therapy
When:  Monday, November 12, 12:00-1:00pm
Dr. Greenberger will present methods she uses to help physical therapy students develop skills in effective listening.  Through a combination of class discussions, small group work, and role-playing, students gain communication skills that can be used with patients and in personal relationships.  The selected topics course she offers teaches students how to recognize and censor automatic, habitual, non-listening responses, and create a culture of trust and respect between individuals.

Mindfulness and Environmental Sentinals
Co-hosted with Tim Drake, Department of Environmental Studies
When:  Monday, December 3, 12:00-1:00pm
Tim Drake will describe activities and routines that he uses in his Environmental Sentinals class to foster awareness and mindfulness of the present moment. Students begin simply by becoming aware of them selves, body, breathe and noticing what ever is already present within. He then guides them to shift the focus to the external world around and to experience the environment with all senses.

Please join your colleagues for semester-long, recurring discussions over lunch. Cross disciplinary faculty facilitators will co-lead hour-long informal teaching discussions (with Judith Ross-Bernstein, CFE) in a reflective format so that together we can share pedagogical narratives, strategies, joys and dilemmas common to us all. Meditation and Wellness

Mary Bentley will discuss how she uses meditation as one of the health behaviors that is a part of a project called “5 for 5” - experiencing 5 small, healthful behavior changes for 5 days each – in her class “Wellness: multicultural perspectives on Health and Healing”.

Pathways Training for New Faculty

Description: This workshop will be led by Mike Pusateri, Psy.D. and will introduce participants to:  identifying a potential mental health crisis, initiating a conversation with someone at risk, asking directly about suicidal thoughts, and making referrals to appropriate resources.

Teaching Conversations: The Power of Observation

Judith Ross-Bernstein (CFE) and her faculty colleagues kick-off this recurring opportunity for frank and informal teaching discussions.  Classroom observations provide an opportunity for expanding our real-time teaching narratives and to self-reflect about the pedagogical choices we make as instructors.  This session addresses the why, what, and how of observing the pedagogy of one’s cross-disciplinary peers.  All faculty are invited.  Participants in I C Teaching : Three Days of Teaching Visits are encouraged to attend.  Lunch is provided.
