Creating a Culture of Respect

This Diversity, Equity & Inclusion for Students course engages all learners–regardless of ability, race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, religion, sexual orientation, or gender identity–in creating respectful and inclusive campus communities at Ithaca College.

This 40-minute course introduces incoming and transfer students to key topics including: 

  • Identity and Selfhood 

  • Identity Transitions 

  • Power, Privilege, and Oppression 

  • Bias and Unconscious Bias 

  • Respect 

  • Allyship 

  • Self-Care” 

HOW TO ACCESS THE COURSE

Our Fall 2020 DEI course was made available on Tuesday, August 11th, and must be completed by Tuesday, August 25th. Each student received an email containing a link to the login page for the course. Use your IC netpass (username and password) to log in and begin the course.

Consider taking this DEI in multiple sittings, rather than all at once. When you log back in, you can continue where you left off. When accessing the course, make sure:

-You are checking your Ithaca College email account and not a third party account that may not be linked yet (Gmail, Yahoo, your high school email account).

-You check your spam/ junk folder in the IC email account just in case. 

-You allow any blocked content to be seen and trusted when opening this email (the prompt at the top of the message) to make sure the link is viewable and clickable. 

-You are not trying to access the course on your phone. A tablet, iPad, laptop, or desktop are strongly suggested and the course may not open on your phone. This course is best supported by the latest versions of Chrome, Firefox, and Safari (preferred), or Microsoft Internet Explorer 11+

Here are answers to some of the most commonly asked questions:

Q. What is the purpose of this DEI Course?

A. As an academic community, Ithaca College is committed to providing an environment that encourages scholarship and personal growth. Students are expected to develop maturity, self-sufficiency, responsibility, self-understanding, and an understanding of and respect for the rights of others. This course is a first step towards talking about our community values and putting our college diversity statement in action. 

Q. Does the course collect personal information about my feelings, attitude, and behaviors around diversity, equity, and inclusion?

A. The course includes confidential surveys to help personalize your experience and to measure attitudes and behaviors in our student population. ALL SURVEY RESPONSES ARE CONFIDENTIAL. IC will only receive information about the student body as a whole and will never see an individual student's answers.

Q. What if I have technical problems with completing the course on my computer?

A. The DEI course works best on either Firefox or Chrome, so if you're using a different internet browser, you should consider making a temporary change for the purpose of completing the course. Free versions of Firefox and Chrome can easily be downloaded off the internet. For accessibility issues, select “Accessibility Mode” once you are in the course. Personalized technical support is available 24/7 via chat or phone. Q.  I am a transfer student.  Do I need to complete this?

A.  Yes.

Q. I am a parent/caregiver of an incoming student. Do I have to complete the course?

A. No.  there is no required course for parents and caregivers.

Q.  What about students who do not have easy access to computers at home or in their community?

A.  We ask that you consider all the possibilities for accessing a computer.  A friend or family member may be willing to let you use their computer for this purpose.  The course can be completed on a computer, iPad, or tablet with access to the internet and audio capabilities.
