Campus Life

Celebrating an American Hero

The campus community kicked off Martin Luther King Jr. week with an MLK day breakfast and two important announcements. First, President Peggy R. Williams shared the news that starting in school year 2007–8, the College will not hold classes on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a national holiday.

Second, vice president for student affairs and campus life Brian McAree announced the winner of the first annual MLK flash animation contest. Chris Wilson ’08, a communications major, took first place in “The Movement Is Still Moving” competition by edging out fellow communication student Anna Rainey ’06. For his efforts, Wilson took home a brand new Apple Ipod. The contest was open to all IC students, who were encouraged to create a 30- to 45-second multimedia flash animation on the theme of “what the civil rights movement means to you today; what about the movement is still moving; and what lessons of Dr. King do we need to be reminded of.” The judges’ criteria were relevance, creativity, and message.

Wilson’s and Rainey’s animations can be viewed at www.ithaca.edu/involvement/service/mlktext.htm.
