Ten songs of the year

THE TEN SONGS FOR 2017-18

Every year IC jazz studies creates a list of ten standards which all jazz students at Ithaca College must thoroughly internalize (the melody, chords, and often with the lyrics and in all 12 keys as possible, and completely memorized). These songs are subsequently used as study material for jazz repertoire and jazz arranging classes, and are played in private jazz lessons, combos, ensembles and jam sessions.

For each song, be aware of the primary source. In order to do that, you need to research the songwriter. If the composer is from the "Great American Songbook" (Harold Arlen, Cole Porter, George Gershwin or Irving Berlin, for a few examples) your primary source for the song is the published sheet music -- not the real book, and not any single jazz performer's version (as great as they may be).

But, if the composer is equally or more of a performer than a published tunesmith (Thelonious Monk, Charlie Parker, Horace Silver, are some examples) then their recordings are the primary source. Listen to and study their recordings first before seeking out any sheet music. Note that the "Real Book" is not a primary source in either case.

The ten songs for 2017-18 are:

  • Come Rain or Come Shine - Harold Arlen & Johnny Mercer
  • East of the Sun — Brooks Bowman
  • Pennies From Heaven — Arthur Johnston and Johnny Burke
  • How Deep Is the Ocean — Irving Berlin
  • On Green Dolphin Street — Bronislau Kaper and Ned Washington
  • Epistrophy — Thelonious Monk
  • Desafinado — Antonio Carlos Jobim
  • Confirmation — Charlie Parker
  • Nica’s Dream — Horace Silver
  • Con Alma — Dizzy Gillespie

Do you have all these songs completely internalized? In all 12 keys? With lyrics?  If so, then be sure you've done the same with all the songs from previous years.

LISTENING LIST

The listening list below is not intended to be complete. It's just a cross section of artists who've tackled the songs. For each of the recordings, be sure to research the performer -- their instrument, era, influences, and who else is playing on the recording.
