*POSTPONED* 'Democracy Now!' Cohost Juan Gonzalez to Discuss Racism in U.S. Media at Ithaca College
ITHACA, NY — Award-winning journalist Juan González will discuss “The Epic Story of Race & the U.S. Media” at Ithaca College on Wednesday, Oct. 3. Free and open to the public, his 7:30 p.m. presentation in Emerson Suites is sponsored by the Park Center for Independent Media.
González is the coauthor of “News for All the People: The Epic Story of Race and the American Media,” a book that explores media coverage of race throughout U.S. history. Illustrating how racism in mainstream media often prompted the birth of independent media outlets and movements that challenged official narratives, the book was called by Bill Moyers an “engrossing story of how the press sees — and doesn’t see — who we are as a people.”
In addition to cohosting the daily television/radio news program “Democracy Now!” González is a columnist for the New York Daily News. His other books include “Fallout: The Environmental Consequences of the World Trade Center Collapse” and “Harvest of Empire: A History of Latinos in America,” widely used as a classroom text. In October, a documentary film based on “Harvest of Empire” and featuring a lengthy interview with González will be released in theaters in New York and Los Angeles.
A two-time winner of the George Polk Award for investigative journalism, González has served as president of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists and the National Congress for Puerto Rican Rights. He has been named by Hispanic Business Magazine as one of America’s most influential Hispanics and earned a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Hispanic Academy of Media Arts and Sciences.
Based in the Roy H.
