Information for Current and Potential Student Organization Advisors

On behalf of The Office of Student Engagement, we thank those who have chosen to be a Student Organization Advisor. We recognize how much time and effort it takes to be a mentor; please know we appreciate you!

As an Advisor, you assume a number of roles. It is up to you and your Organization to determine what exactly your role is within the Organization. Aside from being the person who signs off on financial documents and a variety of other forms, the Advisor can make the difference between a mediocre Organization and an excellent Organization. Organizations often utilize their Advisor for assistance with solving problems, resolving conflict, recruiting new members, and fundraising efforts.

Advisors are also automatically added to a Microsoft Teams Group just for Student Organization Advisors, where they will receive updates and news from OSE, networking opportunities, and hear about upcoming events just for Advisors.

Are you interested in advising a Student Organization?

The Office of Student Engagement continues to welcome new Student Organizations every year. In order to complete the Recognition process, Student Organizations are required to have an Advisor (any full-time faculty/staff member at Ithaca College). Some Organizations have an Advisor in mind when starting the process, but many do not! In those instances, they come to the OSE looking for help in finding someone. Please fill out this form if you are interested in this opportunity.

If you and a Student Organization seem like you could potentially be a good match, we will introduce you via e-mail and you can meet with them individually to discuss expectations and ultimately decide on your own if it'll be a good fit. Thanks for your interest!

What is an Advisor?

A Student Organization Advisor is a full-time faculty or staff member at Ithaca College who provides support and guidance to officers and members of the Student Organization. An Advisor is one who gives ideas, shares insight, provides a different perspective, and encourages Organization members. Advisors should seek to challenge Student Organization members and support them as they make decisions.

Why be an Advisor?

Advising a Student Organization can be a very rewarding experience. Working with students outside of the classroom allows faculty and staff the ability to share information and resources and encourage development in the student. This close interaction with students allow Advisors the opportunity to promote skills such as leadership development, ethics, teamwork, appreciation of diversity, and self-discovery that are invaluable to students when they leave Ithaca College.

Who can be an Advisor?

An Advisor can be any full-time member of the Ithaca College faculty or staff who is willing to commit to advising a Student Organization. The Advisor is responsible for a few things throughout the academic year. An Advisor must accept the Advisor Agreement Terms & Conditions (found on IC Engage) during the recognition process and approval all travel authorizations. Other than that, it's up to the Advisor how big of a role they'd like to play within the Organization.
