Sexually Transmitted Infections and Diseases

STIs/STDs affect people of all ages and backgrounds. Approximately 19 million new cases occur in the United States each year. About half of these cases occur among young people aged 15-24 years. There are many specific types and strains of sexually transmitted infections.  Some are easily diagnosed through testing, and some are more difficult to detect. Be well informed! Here are some excellent web resources for information about specific STI/STDs:

American Social Health Association: http://www.ashastd.org/learn/learn_overview.cfm

Planned Parenthood: http://www.plannedparenthood.org/health-topics/stds-hiv-safer-sex-101.htm

How Can IC Students Obtain STI/STD Testing?

Hammond Health Center provides screening tests for a wide variety of STI/STDs. The cost of the test will be determined by your health insurance plan. If you are covered under the IC Student Insurance, you can talk with your Hammond Health Center provider to find out which STI tests are covered by that plan. If you have another insurance plan, you can pay for the test yourself, or your bursar account will be billed and your insurance may or may not reimburse you.** To determine what is covered by your health insurance, call the toll-free number that appears on your insurance card. The Customer Service representative will be able to answer your questions about what is covered under your (or your parents’) insurance plan.

**Confidentiality concern? If you have the test fee billed to your bursar account or to your parent’s insurance, the phrase, "Health Center Fee" will appear on the bill. Keep in mind that your parents might ask you what the fee is for. They may want an itemized bill to submit to their insurance company. Hammond Health Center will not release an itemized bill to the parents without your permission. Paying for the bill yourself, at the time of service, is the only 100% guaranteed way to completely protect your privacy.

HIV Testing is covered in full (no charge) for all students. HIV testing is available at Hammond Health Center. You can get tested and get your results on the same day. For information regarding HIV testing, visit the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) website at: www.hivtest.org/faq.cfm

HPV (Human Papillomavirus) Vaccine

Hammond Health Center can provide the HPV vaccine to IC students. There are 3 injections in the series. There is no charge for the office visit, but there will be a charge for the vaccine itself. The HPV vaccine is now recommended for both women and men. For information about HPV and the vaccine, visit the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) website at: www.cdc.gov/hpv/.
