THRIVE Wellness Coaching & Workshop

Resiliency can be defined in different ways. One definition that is easy to remember is: "The ability to become strong, healthy, or successful again after a negative experience." THRIVE at IC is a program offered by the Center for Health Promotion which is intended to help students increase their resiliency, and as a result, improve their overall wellbeing and personal success.

In the program, students have an opportunity to engage in various activities to learn about the THRIVE Resilience Pyramid and how different aspects of health and wellness interact to allow them to grow from mistakes, connect with others, and find their purpose. Students learn how to build their own resiliency to increase their ability to be successful in college and after graduation. This program focuses on exploring realistic strategies that participants identify for themselves, and learning about resources on and off campus that will help them succeed.

THRIVE is available as a one-on-one personal wellness coaching session in the Center for Health Promotion and as a group workshop.

In a private wellness coaching session, the student has an opportunity to discuss their concerns in a range of personal wellness areas such as nutrition, sleep, exercise, stress management, and substance use. They can set practical goals and identify strategies for change that they feel are most relevant. Not all college students use substances. For those students who choose to use alcohol or other drugs, wellness coaching is a confidential and nonjudgmental place to discuss if that substance use is impacting their college goals.

Getting enough food and the right proportions of nutrients is essential for physical energy and clear thinking. Listen to your body and eat what works for you and makes you feel good.

Although it can be hard to get moving when you have a ton of stuff to do, the benefits of exercise are worth it. Endorphins released during exercise help improve mood, daytime energy and sleep.

Getting Good Sleep is important for our physcial and mental/emotional health. Sleep is a learned behavior meaning we can unlearn habits that don't work for us and learn how to get better sleep.

Connect With Nature

Research shows that spending just a few hours a week in nature can help:

  • Cognition
  • Concentration
  • Reduce Stress
  • Social Connections
  • Sense of Well Being

Hike the Natural Lands or the many trails in the area.

Connect with Others
connect with others
  • Join a club, team or organization.
  • Connect with people with different interests to learn new skills and gain new ideas.
  • It has been shown that people with more social capital (social supports) are more resilient.
Use Resources
use resources

Know and Use Resources both on campus and off to get the most of your experience at IC.

Along with friends, family, professors, TAs, employers, and other connections you have made here or back home, there are many on campus and community resources available.

Adopt a Growth Mindset
Growth Mindset

Adopting a growth mindset means:

  • Believing your basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work.
  • Thinking about what you can learn from mistakes instead of fearing failure.
  • That there is power in the word "yet".
  • Silencing your inner critic or inner gremlin.

Have Fun and Play
have fun/play

Attending to your school work and responsibilities is important, but your well being is dependent on taking breaks that allow you to have fun and feel happy.

Schedule and take time to do activities that you do purely for enjoyment. Use this time to connect with others or just yourself, but most of all, have fun and play.

Practice Mindfulness

Practicing mindfulness helps us pay attention to the present moment. We can get stuck thinking about the past or worrying about the future, but that's not always helpful and can add stress to our lives.

  • Try using a meditation app such as "Headspace" or "Calm".
  • Be mindful of how you are using your time, especially around a phone, other device and the internet.
Express Gratitude
gratitude

People who practice gratitude take time to notice and appreciate things in their lives. People who are able to do this experience more positive emotions, sleep better, and are generally happier.

  • Make a gratitude list daily.
  • Notice what makes you smile.
Lend Your Strenghts
lend strengths

We each have our own unique set of strengths and talents. Be aware of what yours are and find ways to share them with your community. Sharing your strengths with others clarifies what is most meaningful to you and strengthens your values and outlook on life.

In many ways, we all have the same purpose: to be our best self.

  • Explore your values, strengths, interests, and talents.
  • Try new things
  • Realize there isn't one perfect solution for your life
  • Adopt a growth mindset and realize its about the journey, not the destination.
