If you enroll in the speech-language pathology major as an undergraduate at Ithaca College, you will take phonetics with me as a first year undergraduate student or as a sophomore. In phonetics you will learn how to transcribe speech sounds using the phonetic alphabet. Speech-language pathologists transcribe the speech of individuals who are having difficulty pronouncing sounds correctly. Transcription is a beginning step in helping others to make corrections to their speech production.
If you enroll in either of the speech-language pathology majors (SLP or SLPTC) as a graduate student, you will take Language Disorders in Children Ages 3 to 21 with me. In this course we focus on methods for assessing and treating language disorders in children. The methods we use are based on theories of language development or language disorders and emphasize evidence-based practice.
