Program Overview

The demand for health professionals is estimated to grow by approximately 20% over the next 10 to 15 years according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Virtually every type of health and human performance professional will be in strong demand, including allied health practitioners, clinicians, and health care professionals. Therefore an undergraduate degree in a health-related field can be a very promising investment in your future. If you are confident about your future career path in the health sciences or human performance fields, please apply directly to that specific major. However there are so many possibilities for health careers, we understand that it can be difficult to know which career track is best for you! We have carefully designed the School of Health Sciences and Human Performance (HSHP) Preprofessional Program to give you a way to explore your interests and strengths to help you with selecting a rewarding career path.

The HSHP Preprofessional Program is designed for freshman and sophomore students interested in exploring health or human performance-related careers. Our flexible program gives you up to four semesters (approximately 60 credit hours) to strategically sample courses, meet faculty and fellow students, and learn more about yourself and your interests before applying into a specific degree program. The Program Coordinator, as well as a team of faculty advisers, will be there to help you every step along the way in making decisions about courses and future career path.

Declaring a Major

HSHP offers the largest diversity of health-related degree programs (17 undergraduate) in the Northeast and Midwest. Both majors and minors are available in a variety of disciplines. Once a Preprofessional student decides upon a career track, they will apply as an internal transfer into their major of choice. Entry into several of our undergraduate majors including, but not limited to, Athletic Training, Occupational Therapy, and Physical Therapy is highly competitive. Transferring into any major is not guaranteed and depends upon capacity, student academic performance, and other Department-specific transfer requirements. Since most careers in health care require advanced degrees to practice, many students opt for an undergraduate major which allows them to establish a strong baseline understanding of the health care field and explore general interests, while collecting necessary prerequisite courses to apply for graduate school in a specific discipline.
