Sakai (Ithaca College's learning management system) is recommended as the primary method for delivery of course materials and online instruction. 

Sakai provides access to a number of tools we can use for communicating, teaching, and assessing online. Google Chrome is the recommended browser for accessing Sakai and the Sakai Tools.

UPDATE YOUR SAKAI HOME PAGE

It is important that students view course updates and information when they land on your Sakai course site.

Update the Home Page of your Sakai course site

Overview (Welcome) Display Documentation  Let students know of changes in schedule, syllabus, or format.  You can also include links to any other external resources you may be using.  

Set your expectations for students' engagement with Sakai forums and resources, where they can get support, and what they can expect from you including your standard response times to emails and assignments. 

Communicate Directly with Your Students

It is recommended that you communicate with your students through Sakai to support continuity across their course experiences.

Make Announcements using the Sakai Announcement Tool

Announcements Tool Documentation  This is the fastest way to communicate with your entire class in Sakai. Set the announcement to "high priority" so it forwards to students' email addresses. 

Send a message with the Sakai Messaging Tool

Messages Tool Documentation  Send messages to a single student, groups or to all students. The students can send private messages to you. 

Communicate important meetings and due dates with the Sakai Calendar Tool

Calendar Tool Documentation  Many Sakai tools integrate with Calendar. Add manual calendar items.  Students have access to aggregated calendar, making it easier for them to keep track of all of their classes.

Share Course Documents and Files

Providing course materials to support your changing plans, from updated schedules to readings, allow you to shift more instruction online.

Share media files using the Media Gallery Tool in Sakai

Media Gallery Videos Faculty or students can upload video, audio and other media files to share in private or public channels. Note that the IC Library can upload media files from its collection to a Sakai site.

Leganto Library Guide  Build, maintain, and share resource lists that include all material types. Library staff can provide resources efficiently, and students can access all course materials in one place and from any device.

Remote proctoring of quizzes and exams is not supported. Consider shifting to open-book tests and quizzes.

Gradebook Documentation  The Gradebook allows you to securely communicate grades and calculate a running Course Grade. You can create manual items or allow Sakai tools to create Gradebook items.
